Our adventure begins at Tokyo Station, where we'll board the sleek Shinkansen (bullet train) to Echigo-Yuzawa. From there, we'll drive to our destination: the remarkable Matsunoyama Onsen, a hidden sanctuary for some of Japan's most extraordinary birds.

We start our day at dawn in Shiga Kogen, where the morning chorus of Brown-headed Thrushes, Siberian Blue Robins, and Grey Buntings guides our search. These elusive songsters create nature's own symphony, and with some luck, we might encounter the secretive Siberian Thrush or the charismatic Japanese Robin - both highly sought-after species among international birders.
Today's adventure takes us along various trails within Shiga Kogen, each offering unique micro-habitats and their specialist birds. We'll quietly traverse these paths, listening for the distinctive calls of the Northern Hawk-Cuckoo and Oriental Cuckoo echoing through the forest. The vibrant Red-flanked Bluetail may flash its brilliant colors as it flits through the understory, while we search for glimpses of the tiny Asian Stubtail and the melodious Japanese Leaf Warbler.
Each trail reveals new possibilities, and our patient approach maximizes our chances of spotting these shy forest dwellers. The day's varied terrain promises an exciting mix of species, making every step an opportunity for discovery in this mountain paradise.

This special location is a stronghold for the Japanese Robin, and we'll have excellent chances to observe this enchanting endemic species in its preferred habitat.
The crisp mountain air and serene alpine setting provide perfect conditions for spotting the brilliant Red-flanked Bluetail as it forages among the undergrowth, while the melodic songs of Japanese Leaf Warblers echo through the ancient trees. The late afternoon light in this mountain paradise creates magical moments for both birdwatching and photography, making our final full day of birding truly memorable.
